What were you like as a teenager? What were your favorite books and why?
I was/am a geek. A D&D playing, chorus-singing, braniac thespian. You know, the kind who took extra art and English classes because study hall and lunch were just wastes of time.
We last spoke in September 2008 about To Catch a Mermaid (Little, Brown, 2007) and Saving Juliet (Bloomsbury, 2008). Could you update us on these titles?
Saving Juliet is out in paperback and made some summer reading lists and continues to build readership.

How do you define artistic success?
For me, artistic success is a moving target. It is always painful to read my books after they are published because, in hindsight, I can always think of ways they can be improved.
I want to go out to bookstores and libraries and put sticky notes in with all my changes.

Twenty-two leading children’s book authors have launched a free online database of nonfiction books, www.INKThinkTank.com, designed to help teachers, librarians, and homeschoolers find the books they need to meet curriculum requirements in grades K-12.
The database will enable users to build an outstanding classroom or home library that includes material required by school districts nationwide.
